ABOUT THE SILVERSMITHS: Possibly the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world, the origin of this business having been established by Anthony Nelme c.1680. Francis Nelme inherited the business on the death of his father in 1722 and continued until 1739 when Thomas Whipham took over the business. On his death in 1756 his son Thomas Whipham jr took into partnership Charles Wright. Thomas retired in 1775 and the business was continued by Charles Wright. The business was amalgamated by Henry Chawner in 1786 and the latter son of Edward Barnard became the foreman of the firm. Chawner was master to Edward Barnard so that the connection of the Barnard family can be traced from 1773. In 1796 they took into partnership John Emes who became the owner after the retirement of Chawner, maintaining Edward Barnard as manager. Emes died in 1808 and his widow Rebecca took as partner Edward Barnard. Rebecca Emes withdrew in 1829 and Edward Barnard became the proprietor with his sons Edward Barnard (II), John Barnard and William Barnard, trading under the style Edward Barnard & Sons. After the retirement of Edward Barnard (I) the firm was continued by Edward Barnard (II) (1846-1851), John Barnard (1846-1868), William Barnard (1846), Edward Barnard (III) (1868), Walter Barnard (1868-1903), John Barnard (II) (1868-1903), Michael Barnard (1896-1903), Stanley Barnard (1896-1903) and Robert Dubcock (1896). The firm continued until 1977 when they were taken over by Padgett & Braham Ltd. Gorham Martele, Complete Sterling Silver Tea Set With Tray & Tilting Kettle

Gorham Martele, sterling silver Art Nouveau hand-hammered tea & coffee set complete with original tray and tilting hot water kettle on stand with burner. Round form, with typical pronounced hand-hammered surface and nouveau style flower decoration. Hallmarked on the underside as shown.  Martele silver items were made from the higher standard .9584 silver as opposed to the sterling standard being .925 Set consists of: Tilting how water kettle on stand with burner 14.5″ tall Coffee Pot 9.5″ tall  TeaPot 7.5″ tall Sugar Bowl & Cover 7.25″ tall Waste Bowl 4″ tall Creamer 5.75″ tall Large Two Handled Tray 31.5″ x 21″ Set weighs a total of approx 11,500 grams = 369.40 troy oz = 405.25 regular ounces = 25 1/3 lbs. Great quality, condition, style, maker & size   Provenance: This tea set was made as a special order for Volney & Mabel Williamson, 1910. Volney D.Williamson (1865 – 1920) was one of Spokane’s early millionaires due to gold, silver, coal & precious mineral mining interests across North America, Australia & Africa. While working the Santa Rosa mine, he discovered the first turquoise mine in Mexico. In 1905 he married Mabel C.Cotter of Denver Colorado. According to Gorham’s Martele archives the coffee pot took 86 hours for the skilled silversmith to make and another 74 hours just to do the chasing. The tilting kettle on stand took 135 hours to create & 100 hours to do the chasing.  The net cost just to make all 7 pieces was $1918.00   Martele was an exclusively handcrafted range, whose name was derived from the French ‘marteler’ (to hammer) denoting the production technique used, ie hammered or handwrought. Martele was produced by Gorham from 1897 to 1930 under the guidance of William Codman. Codman being a fine English silversmith brought over in 1891 for this express purpose.  According to Charles Carpenter, author of Gorham Silver, the 9584 standard of silver was used as it was more malleable and easier to work by hand. According to Pristo author of Martel:Gorham’s Nouveau Art Silver, he states that the higher standard of silver was used to meet the French standard of .950 and the English Brittania standard of .9584, so that the silver would be of the highest grade and could not be considered inferior, especially in light of all the awards won. Martele silver was featured at the 1900 Paris Exposition, 1902 Turin Exposition, and the 1904 St. Louis Fair, where Martele won most of the awards. During its entire production only about 4,800 pieces were made, pieces, not sets, and of these only 86 tea sets were crafted, this being one of those, although due to the price of silver jumping up in the 1980s, much Martele silver was shamefully melted down. Due to the fact that all Martele silver was handmade, each set tends to be unique in style.  This tea set is a very good example and is in very good condition, no monograms, inscriptions or removals, also rare to be so complete, original and in such excellent condition.   Most if not all items are antique or used items, and as such nothing is ‘perfect’, but we always will describe any damage, repair, inscriptions, monograms etc to the best of our ability. All weights & measurements are approximate, but as accurate as possible. Please view all the pictures as they form part of the description. Stunning, English Sterling Silver Neff, ‘Sailing Ship’, Fine Detail. 26″ Tall

An absolutely stunning and rare sterling silver Neff. Superb quality and detail, and an unusual size. This three masted neff is fully manned and rigged with sailors, the deck detachable, the hull with putti riding dolphins and numerous fish and dolphins among chased waves and applied with a mask at the bow. Also Unusual to be made and hallmarked in England, as they were often German made in 800 silver. This neff is solid sterling silver, and is English hallmarked throughout. Made in London by Pairpoint Brothers In 1923. Stands at 26″ tall x 24″ in length. Neff (originally spelt nef) was an ornamental model ship, galleon, usually made in silver, silver-gilt or gold, and made specially for the dinner table. They were often quite elaborate with masts, sails, rigging and various figures on board. Early examples (13th-16th century) were drinking cups or receptacles for dining implements. Neff’s originated from the continent and were used in France, Germany, Spain and Italy but most neff’s found today were made in Germany at the end of the 19th century. Traditionally the neff was made in two sections and the top half was removable so that the hollow hull could be used to contain the spoon, knife, napkin, spices of the host. Later neffs were fashioned to hold wine, sweetmeats or a variety of special condiments. Sometimes the nef had wheels, so they could be rolled from one end of the table to the other. Messrs. PAIRPOINT BROTHERSSilversmiths. 80a Dean Street, Soho LondonThe grandfather of the present proprietors of the business was William Pairpoint, the celebrated water-gilder, who was well-known at the beginning of the present century. That branch of the business is still carried on, under the name of W. Pairpoint and Sons, in Gerrard Street. Mr. Edward Pairpoint, the father of the brothers Pairpoint, who had been apprenticed to one of Lambert’s subsidiary houses, began business in 1848. Of the place occupied by the four brothers Pairpoint in the silver world little is necessary to be said, for their silver mark JP over FP, may be seen in every retail silver merchant’s window in London. It is admitted on all sides by experts, sometimes with a sigh of regret, sometimes with a grin of malice, that ” Pairpoint ” copies of ancient patterns are dangerously near being indistinguishable from the originals, whilst their new manufactures carry one back to the days when the master silversmiths employed the first artists of the day to assist them in their productions ” devised in love and fashioned cunningly.” The firm is principally known to the trade as manufacturers of large and important works, such as centerpieces, presentation vases, and the like. To the amateur of antique silver and Sheffield plate, whether he be in Europe or America, the name of Pairpoint is a household word, and the quantity of antique plate and old ” Sheffield ” that has passed through the hands of the firm since the renaissance of 1874 is little short of fabulous.

Rare, Monumental, Antique English, Sterling Silver “Warwick Vase” Champagne Cooler – Georgian, Dated 1818

An Exceptional Quality, Rare & Massive, Sterling Silver Warwick Vase Wine Cooler. George III Dated 1818, Made By Solomon Royes & John East Dix In London, England. The Detail Is Exceptional, Probably The Best You Could Find, And One Of The Earliest & Largest Examples In Sterling Silver. The Original Warwick Vase, An Ancient Roman Marble Vase With Bacchic Ornament, Was Discovered In Pieces, Near Rome At Hadrian’s Villa At Tivoli About 1771 by Gavin Hamilton, A Scottish Painter, Antiquarian And Art Dealer. He Sold The Fragments To Sir William Hamilton, British Envoy At The Court Of Naples, Who Had It Repaired & Restored. It Then Passed To His Nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, Who Brought It Back To Warwick Castle Where It Caused A Sensation. At First It Sat On The Lawn At The Castle, But Later Was Moved Into A Greenhouse To Preserve It From The Weather. The Vase Was Widely Admired And Much Visited In The Earl’s Greenhouse, But He Permitted No Copies To Be Made, Until 1808, When Molds Were Made At The Special Request Of Lord Lonsdale, Who Intended To Have A Full Size Replica Cast In Silver. The Sculptor William Theed The Elder, Who Was Working For The Royal Silversmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, Was Put In Charge Of The Arrangements, But Lord Lonsdale Changed His Mind, And The Project Was Aborted. The Rich Ornament, And The Form, Which Is Echoed In Sixteenth Century Mannerist Vases, Combined To Give The Warwick Vase Great Appeal To The Nineteenth Century Eye: Numerous Examples In Silver And Bronze Were Made, And Porcelain Versions By Rockingham and Worcester. Theed’s Moulds Were Sent To Paris, Where Two Full Size Bronze Replicas Were Cast, One Now In Windsor Castle, The Other In The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. It Was Also The Model For The Silver Gilt Tennis Trophy, The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup Won At The Australian Open. The Vase Has Two Large Handles Formed Of Interwoven Vine Branches, From Which The Tendrils, Leaves, And Clustering Grapes Spread Around The Upper Margin And Features Classical Bacchanal Masks And Associated Emblems, Such As A Pine Cone Tip Staff Known As A Thyrsus. Enfolding The Middle Of The Body Is The Skin Of A Panther, With Head And Claws. Above Are Heads, All Representing Satyrs, Except One, Which Is That Of A Female, Traditionally Said To Have Been Substituted For A Missing Head And Made By An Italian Carver In The 18th century Into The Likeness Of Lady Hamilton; However, As The Result Of A Supposed Quarrel With Her, The Carver Gave Lady Hamilton’s Head A Fawn’s Ear. The Vase Stands On A Square Pedestal Foot. A Truly Remarkable Item Of Historical Interest As Well As Being Decorative & Usable. This Is Just Another Example Of Investment Quality Items Available From Our Collection Of Silver DIMENSIONS 15.25 in.Hx22 in.Wx16 in.D 39 cmHx56 cmWx41 cmD Weighs Approx. 425 Troy Oz = 13,220 Grams, Well Over 29 Pounds.
