About The Silversmith
The House of Odiot was founded in 1690 by Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot. The House rose to prominence under the extremely talented Jean-Baptiste Claude, Jean Baptiste Gaspard’s grandson. He received many prestigious orders from the Emperor, including Napoleon’s coronation sword and scepter and the Emperor’s campaign dinner service. Odiot was particularly influenced by the antique style and created lavish displays in silver & silver-gilt. Odiot’s reputation spread beyond the Empire to all the courts of Europe.
Charles Nicolas Odiot experimented with electroplating, a new technique he brought back from England in 1824. He worked in the revived rocaille style and by 1825 he was purveyor of silverware by appointment to His Majesty the King Louis-Philippe and to the Royal Family of Orleans. Charles Nicolas was succeeded by his son Gustave who revived the largest order placed with the House of Odiot, 3,000 pieces of solid gold flatware from Saïd Pacha, the Viceroy of Egypt. Gustave went on to become the purveyor by appointment to the court of His Majesty the Tsar.
The House of Odiot still functions today. Their exceptionally rich heritage has enabled the House to continue to produce the highest quality of objects. The preservation of knowledge through the ages and their extensive archives make them unique in their production. An unparalleled collection of patterns, moulds and drawings has enabled the House to produce modern day silverware from the original historic moulds and also develop new designs drawing inspiration from the archives.

ABOUT THE SILVERSMITHS:
Possibly the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world, the origin of this business having been established by Anthony Nelme c.1680. Francis Nelme inherited the business on the death of his father in 1722 and continued until 1739 when Thomas Whipham took over the business. On his death in 1756 his son Thomas Whipham jr took into partnership Charles Wright. Thomas retired in 1775 and the business was continued by Charles Wright. The business was amalgamated by Henry Chawner in 1786 and the latter son of Edward Barnard became the foreman of the firm. Chawner was master to Edward Barnard so that the connection of the Barnard family can be traced from 1773. In 1796 they took into partnership John Emes who became the owner after the retirement of Chawner, maintaining Edward Barnard as manager. Emes died in 1808 and his widow Rebecca took as partner Edward Barnard. Rebecca Emes withdrew in 1829 and Edward Barnard became the proprietor with his sons Edward Barnard (II), John Barnard and William Barnard, trading under the style Edward Barnard & Sons. After the retirement of Edward Barnard (I) the firm was continued by Edward Barnard (II) (1846-1851), John Barnard (1846-1868), William Barnard (1846), Edward Barnard (III) (1868), Walter Barnard (1868-1903), John Barnard (II) (1868-1903), Michael Barnard (1896-1903), Stanley Barnard (1896-1903) and Robert Dubcock (1896). The firm continued until 1977 when they were taken over by Padgett & Braham Ltd.

FROM THE CHRISTOFLE WEBSITE;
Cluny is a great classic of French cutlery models inherited from the 18th century. It appeared in the first catalog of the Christofle house in 1862. Its current form, slightly redesigned by the Christofle studio in 1964, magnifies its sober but soft elegance.
