A rare and unusual, Italian .800 silver tray made by the Milan silversmith Luigi Cervone, who was known for his unique designs of blending silver with malachite and other natural minerals. The rectangular tray has a totally plain center, the border with bold scrolling foliage on matted stippled ground and mounted with malachite panels. The Italian markings are on the underside of the handle, the 800 mark denotes the Italian silver standard, and the other marking, which was hard to photograph, but has a STAR, which was enacted into law in Italy in 1968, it has MI for Milan and the number 1007 which was the number assigned to the silversmith Luigi Cervone. He ceased silversmithing in 1970, so the tray dates clearly between 1968 and 1970.
This is a really stunning look, truly a work of art by a unique silversmith.
Tray measures: 27″ x 16.50″
Tray weighs: 3193 grams = 102.65 troy oz = 112.62 regular ounces.
