Stunning Pr Antique English Sterling Silver Epergne Centerpieces. Elkington 1871. 20″ Tall

  • $37,500.00
Stunning Pair Of Antique English, Sterling Silver Epergne Centerpieces Made By Elkington & Co. Birmingham, 1871.

Over 20″ high, a rare pair of tall table centerpieces with grape vines supporting cut & etched crystal bowls. The crystal bowls with matching grape & vine decoration.
Standing on the rocky bases beneath the crystal bowls are 4 different female figures (perhaps representing the 4 continents?).(One with a telescope, one with a palm branch).
The 3 footed rocky base has three set in panels. One panel with the English hallmarks, one with a hand engraved crest above the motto GRATITUDE, and the third panel is blank.
Great quality, condition & maker.
The centerpieces are solid sterling silver, apart from the crystal bowls, and are not weighted or filled.

Elkington & Co are probably one of the most important names in English silver, holding Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI.
Elkington invented the original process of electroplating & electroforming, thereby allowing the manufacture of a vast selection of silver plated items in the Victorian period. They continued to manufacture sterling silver items, as well as plated items well into the 20th century.
